National Family
Business Day

-

Saturday, 19 September 2026

National Family Business Day, 19 September, is dedicated to celebrating the vital role family-owned businesses play in our economy and communities. Family businesses are the heartbeat of Australia and New Zealand, driving innovation, creating jobs, and fostering a sense of community. We invite you to support, choose, and celebrate family businesses... today, and every day.

The Backbone of Our Economy.

Family businesses are integral to Australia's economy, representing 70% of all businesses and employing 50% of the workforce. These businesses generate an estimated $4.3 trillion in wealth, highlighting their significant economic impact.

In New Zealand, family businesses represent a staggering 75% of all businesses, contributing approximately 65% to GDP, and employing around 75% of the workforce. Notably, the agriculture sector, which is pivotal to the nation's economy, is predominantly made up of family-owned businesses.

From small local shops to large multinational corporations, family businesses are the leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and job creators that keep Australia and New Zealand moving forward.

Community Champions.

Beyond their economic contributions, family businesses are also champions of community support and philanthropy. In Australia, family businesses donate around AU$1billion each year. They sponsor local sports teams, build community infrastructure for health, education and the arts, and establish charitable foundations, making significant contributions to the social fabric of our communities. These philanthropic efforts underscore the deep-rooted commitment of family businesses to giving back and supporting the communities in areas where they operate.

Most Trusted.

Family businesses are not only trusted by consumers but also preferred. 70% of consumers trust family-owned businesses over non-family businesses, and 66% are willing to pay more for their products and services. Additionally, 54% of the workforce prefers to work for family businesses, reflecting the positive work environment and strong community ties these companies offer.

Social posts regarding advocacy - Discretionary Trusts

Family Business Association is currently immersed in consultation and communication around the proposed changes to discretionary trusts announced in the Australian 2026/2027 Federal Budget to advocate for families in business.

The proposed changes to the taxation of discretionary trusts are the most significant family business tax reform in a generation. From 1 July 2028, trust income would face a minimum 30% tax at the trustee level, and franking credits would no longer flow through to corporate beneficiaries. For many family businesses, that means substantially higher tax on the same business income, without consideration for how your family business is structured for succession, asset protection and reinvestment.

To ensure content is timely and accurate, we will provide suggested social media text closer to National Family Business Day for you to use, if you choose, to help raise awareness of the impact of these proposed changes.

Alexander Group

Alexander Group was started by my parents, John and Cecile Alexander, back in 1971. I grew up with the business; the trucks were in the backyard of our house in the early...

Brooks hire

Brooks Hire was started by my dad, Doug Brooks, in 1979 when he was just 23. At the time, he was working in the mines while running his own mechanical business on the side. With a bank card and a vision to succeed in business, he bought two disassembled air compressors, fixed them up himself, and began hiring them out to the mining industry. He ran his hire...
